It is my pleasure to be your son/daughter's teacher this year. My goal is to help your child achieve their full potential socially, emotionally, and academically within an environment that fosters mutual respect, risk-taking, and responsibility. I hope this school year will be an exciting and rewarding learning experience for your child. The following is a summary of 3rd grade classroom expectations, homework procedures, grading system, curriculum, and some general guidelines for parents and students.
Classroom Agreements
COJOWA has adopted a school wide behavior program this year called REACHES (Responsibility, Empathy, Assertion, Cooperation, Honesty, Excellence, and Self Control). During the first week of school, 3B students brainstormed a list of things they needed in order to be successful in our classroom that incorporated REACHES. They decided on the following classroom expectations:
Every week I will award a student a Student of the Week award for demonstrating positive behavior, academic improvement/excellence, or consistent effort. This student will bring in a poster so we get to know him a little better. He/She will also be our line leader for the week.
Homework
Students will be assigned homework daily. Every week, students are required to read 60-80 minutes Students also have 1 math page per night, except Fridays. In addition, students will have homework to develop vocabulary, practice grammar, learn spelling patterns, and finish incomplete classwork.
Homework is checked daily.
Marked work will be sent home when graded. Please make sure you look at your child’s work and celebrate their successes and note where they may be having difficulty.
Communication with Parents
Working collaboratively with parents is very important. I welcome questions, concerns, or suggestions anytime. Please feel free to communicate with me via email or the agenda. My preferred mode of communication is via email as it is quick and direct. My email address is [email protected]
Attendance
Good attendance is essential to children’s success in school. It is important to be in school everyday. While make up work can be given when a student returns after an absence, it can never make up for a day of missed school.
If a student is sick, it is understandable to keep him/her home to get better. However, families should schedule vacations during school breaks. Routine visits to doctors should be scheduled after school or during breaks whenever possible.
Evaluation Procedures
Students will be evaluated weekly in the areas of reading, writing, word knowledge, math, social studies, or science. Students will be assessed through in-class assignments such as tests, reader’s responses, and participation. Students will be graded both with rubrics and standard based grading. Grades will be readily available on Phidias.
COJOWA Elementary Grading
A variety of assessments and methods will be used to evaluate students throughout the year in all subject areas. Students will be graded as follows:
Letter Grade
Descriptor of Proficiency
4
Mastered
The student fully meets the expected learning objectives.
3
Approaching Mastery
The student meets the expected learning objectives with minor misconceptions.
2
Developing
The student partially meets the expected learning objectives with gaps in understanding.
1
Not Meeting Expectations
The student does not meet expected learning objectives due to significant gaps in understanding.
CURRICULUM
The curriculum will cover Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Values. The goal is to accomplish standards through whole class, small group, and independent work.

Classwork Policy
*At Colegio Jorge Washington, we believe that recess is an essential part of a student’s day. Recess represents an essential, planned respite from rigorous cognitive tasks. It allows time to rest, play, imagine, think, move, and socialize. Therefore, recess should not be regularly used as a time for students to make-up unfinished classwork or provide remedial support. Although recess is a great opportunity for these activities, please ensure that students have consistent chances to play at recess.

Elementary Assessment Policy
Classwork Policy
- Late class work may be completed at home if it is for practice only.
- Late class work that is for assessment purposes may not be completed at home.
- If a student consistently fails to complete their work due to a learning difficulty during the allotted class period, teachers may consider lessening the amount of work given to that student.
- If a student fails to complete work due to a disciplinary issue, the case may be referred to the office. Students will receive an “Incomplete” for this assignment and will be eligible to submit the assignment as late work.
Missing Work Policy
- Students may be given up to two days to make up work missed for each day of absence with a maximum of one week.
- Teachers determine which work needs to be made up. Other work can be left as NA in the gradebook.
- A student who misses an assessment on the day of absence will be expected to make it up the day they return to class, unless required notes or information for the assessment was given during the absence (class review for the assessment does not count as required information).
- Make-up work will not be given in advance, however during a lengthy illness (no less than three days), special arrangements may be made with the teachers and/or principal.
Late work Policy
- If student work is not submitted, an I for INCOMPLETE will be inputted into Phidias for that assignment.
- If an assignment is turned in late, the maximum grade that can be received is an 85%
- If a student fails to submit an assignment after the final deadline for submission, a 50% will be inputted into Phidias. *The deadline (date in which work is no longer accepted) will be one week after due date. Exceptions may be made for students with special needs.
- Students who fail to turn in assignments when due will have five school days or until the end of the current grading period (quarter), whichever is less.
- Late papers will be marked “Late” at the top of the paper with the reduced grade.
Retake Policy
- Students who have not mastered the standards being assessed (grades 59 and below) and have demonstrated completion of all formative assessments are eligible for retakes.
- Students may retake a failed test one time and have the two grades averaged for a grade.
- This opportunity will not be offered on an ongoing basis but will be considered if there are extenuating circumstances.
- Evidence of reasonable effort must be shown on the first attempt or the administration will have the authority to deny the request for the retake.
Additional Support Policy
- Students who are given additional support to complete an assignment or assessment will be given a grade that matches their ability (no higher than 80%).
- This is applicable for students who are unable to complete the work on their own without support.
- During reading assignments, grades may be adjusted based on the level of text that was used to complete the task.
- Reading assessments should be given using a grade-level text.
